Three brothers die within two weeks in Niger state

Three brothers from the same family have been reported dead within a span of just two weeks in Lapai community in Niger State.

The tragic incidents, which have left residents in shock, involved drowning and a fatal sports injury.

The most recent incident occurred on Thursday morning, April 10, 2025 when two brothers, Ismail Alaba and his sibling, reportedly drowned in the Katcha River.

The brothers were said to be returning home after purchasing bags of rice when the unfortunate accident occurred.

Eyewitnesses suggest that their canoe may have capsized, leading to the fatal outcome.

Before the drowning incident, the family had already been grieving the loss of their eldest son, who passed away recently.

He reportedly sustained severe injuries during a local football match and, despite efforts to save him, succumbed to his wounds.

The late Ismail Alaba was well known in the Lapai community.

Described by many as cheerful, hardworking, and sociable, Ismail operated a thriving Point of Sale (POS) business located at the Low-Cost Junction in Lapai.

His sudden death, along with his brothers’, has sent shockwaves throughout the town.

Residents have continued to pour in tributes and condolences to the grieving family, who are now facing an unimaginable loss.

Community leaders have called for prayers and support for the bereaved, while also urging caution and safety in daily activities
