I recently welcomed twins – Chimamanda Adichie

Author Chimamanda Adichie has disclosed that she welcomed a set of twins with her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, months ago.

The 47-year-old made the revelation in a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian published on Saturday. She explained that she has kept their identity private to protect them from public scrutiny.

Adichie also pointed out how many Nigerians were unaware that she got married in 2019, attributing this to her decision to keep her personal life out of the spotlight.

“You’ve met my babies. I want to protect my children. I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them,” she said.

Speaking further, she acknowledged that Nigerians are often curious about her private affairs, which has made her even more reluctant to share details.

The Half of a Yellow Sun author also weighed in on cancel culture, reflecting on the backlash she faced for defending trans women.

Adichie, who previously spoke about how the controversy affected her career, maintained that cancel culture should be abolished.

“What do I want to say about cancel culture? Cancel culture is bad. We should stop it. End of story,” she stated.

In 2023, Adichie was honored with the chieftaincy title of Odeluwa (Writer of Global Acclaim) in her hometown, Abba.

She noted that she was the first woman to receive such recognition and urged traditional leaders to celebrate both men and women equally.

Expressing gratitude to those who supported her, she said her title would pave the way for more accomplished women to receive similar honors.
